Why Choose Our Defiant Dedan Kenya Karinga Filter Coffee?

Kenya is celebrated for its unique coffee production, boasting nearly 700,000 coffee producers, with 70% being smallholder farmers. The Karinga Factory, situated in Kiambu County near Gatundu town, benefits from the region's rich red volcanic soil and ideal climate. These conditions, coupled with the high altitudes, create perfect temperatures and rainfall patterns, allowing for the slow maturation of coffee cherries.

The Journey of Karinga Coffee

The Karinga Coffee Factory collaborates with the Gitwe Farmers’ Co-operative Society (FCS), comprising 500 active members who predominantly grow tea but are shifting towards coffee due to its higher value. The factory, established in 1983, sources coffee from the villages of Kimaruri, Kariungu, Gachuha, and Mugalwa.

  • Harvest Seasons: The region experiences two harvests annually, from May to June and November to December.
  • Processing Method: Upon arrival at the mill, cherries are washed with water from the Rwabura River, pulped, and then soaked in tanks overnight to ferment. This process breaks down the exterior mucilage. The coffee is then channeled, cleaned, and spread on raised beds in greenhouses to dry for 7-15 days until the ideal moisture content is achieved.

Commitment to Sustainability

Karinga Factory and its producers prioritize sustainability. They have implemented projects to reduce environmental impact, including soaking wastewater in pits to prevent pollution. Factory manager Samwel Muteti, along with six permanent employees, ensures smooth operations during peak seasons. The Gitwe FCS also offers training and financial support to farmers, despite challenges like limited loan facilities and high agricultural input costs.

Who Was Dedan Kimathi?

Defiant Dedan is named in honor of Dedan Kimathi, a celebrated leader in Kenya’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule. His courage and defiance symbolize the spirit and resilience of Kenyan farmers.
